Academic sabbaticals have quite a history in the US, but somehow seem to be less common in Europe. There could be various reasons for this, such as cultural, financial, or organizational differences. Also, no matter your geographical region, not everyone has the freedom to take a break from their regular work for several months. However, after knowing your scientific niche inside-out, it can be great to try something completely different, learn new skills, collaborate with others, and make new friends. Therefore, Katja is getting ready to start her sabbatical in the Human Genetics Department, University of Leipzig Medical Center, Germany led by Johannes Lemke to learn hands-on “all” about epilepsy genetics. Exciting months await her!
